Holiday shopping
Thanksgiving weekend has long been the ultimate shoppers haven for deals on holiday gifts and trinkets. The media outlets all over the country displayed images of seemingly crazy shoppers overtaking stores devouring deals early on Black Friday.
Last year, we joined that crowd and waited in line for the elusive Nintendo Wii. In case you were wondering, we did get one. But that was it. We grabbed our Wii, hopped in the car and made it back home for a snooze. But this year, we were having none of it. No waking up in the wee hours of the day to bear the cold in line for sales. Nope. We opted to sleep in and enjoy the day with family.
We did hit the stores on Saturday with hopes of finishing up our Christmas shopping. I say finish because we already had a handful of gifts purchased and had few left to buy. So, with no kid (she went to grandpa’s for the weekend) we hit the stores.
We actually had a great time. We had saved up all year for Christmas gifts and found some great deals. Some deals we just happened to find us at the register. But, the best thing about the whole deal is that we were able to finish our gift shopping with about $140 left in our Christmas account. Now, to figure out what to do with all the loot.
Actually, we’re going to get our daughter’s gifts with that.
I love Christmas! I also love shopping for bargains about 2-10 days after the initial “blast” of discounts. If you have the space, you can usually stock up for next Christmas with things like: Christmas lights, wrapping paper, candles, inexpensive yet thoughtful goodies for teachers, ornaments, lights, sweaters, coats, boots, gloves, etc.
I have a theory – it’s called “if it’s not there when I get there in January…it’s not meant for me to purchase.”
I loathe the mall so much this time of the year, there is probably no way they will get me in there period. To illustrate, I get my hair cut the week before Thanksgiving so I don’t have to go to the mall during the holiday to get a haircut. By Christmas morning, I’m looking a little shaggy…but I really don’t care. I value my sanity. In November I literally go to Sam’s and buy toilet paper, kleenex, detergent, and usual staples so I don’t *have* to make a trip out.
Maybe it’s years and years of working retail..
or maybe it’s just me wanting to hang on to my cash through the holidays for some big bargains to follow!
